This blog post is inspired by two things. Both my recent session in St. Pete, which observed the Grand Opening of a stunning boutique on Central Ave., Bobbles & Lace; as well as my grandmother's intentional and unwavering interest in my art, her aptitude for psychology and politics, and of course, that she is a professional conversationalist. As I sat in one of my many offices (my grandmothers dining room table, this time), I finally got to see the day come to life. I shuffled through finished pieces with my grandma who pulled a chair up next to me, and with each capture she was eager to hear more. The story behind the image was something she never failed to inquire about and was never out of her grasp. She has always seen things for what they were, what they actually were.
Photography is not about the photograph, in the same way that shopping is not about all the product. Photographs are meant to tell a story, to embalm a memory in an everlasting display, to capture the exact moment where genuine connection, emotion, and expression coincide; honestly and candidly. And shopping is just as intimate; a date with friends, a comparison of interests and reviews on art and human expression, a boost of confidence and self-exploration. Women love shopping. Fact. Okay, most women love shopping. And like several things women become involved in, its deeper meaning tends to smear, and replaced with superficial, guilt-tripping, cover-ups. Shopping is not a reflection of the irresponsibility of women and their finances, but an empowering movement towards autonomy, freedom, and women's love for honest expression, uniqueness, and intimate connection. And let's be honest, without our contribution to the economy, it is practically destitute. In the brief moments where a woman looks to her trusted friend with the fabulous new dress she picked out, or invite's her into the dressing rooms, a buy for intimate connection forms. Hours before the first credit card is swiped. Throughout the entire shopping experience, women are learning, observing, and loving in the best way we know how; by understanding each other. Women are exceptional at observing small and unique expressions that divulge telling intricacies about someone. And uniquely, Bobbles & Lace promotes this through their love for styling the women that come into their store, and for creating a shopping experience that promotes togetherness, understanding, and an honest connection to art.
The perfect moment
This pup's innocent gaze is enough to melt my heart all by itself. But the moment is even more special; a woman's arm is in frame, permanently marked with a trail of paw prints - and as if this pup knows that, he is immediately made safe by the stranger's presence. This arm actually belongs to an Owner of Bobbles & Lace. Her immediate connection to everyone (four-legged friends alike) who came into the store was apparent. These candid, telling moments of affection, intimacy, and humanity are what I look for in every shot.
I love this moment.
This moment is another favorite of mine. A successful day of shopping that seems to close here, but is just the beginning. You can feel good about your art when even the consumers are perfectly fashionable. Even weighed down by another brown tote, the girl seemed to float out of the store, and I love that this frame captures all her buzz and gratitude, in one still shot.
The Cover
Patterns of Blue
As if I couldn't rave about this image more (it is the cover of this post)... it deserves another moment in the spotlight. As the day was closing, a girl entered the store with her friends, and she couldn't have sealed the palette of blues any better.

Denim Dream
Better than...
I never expected to love this as much as I did. But what can I say, I am properly obsessed with jeans- and denim everywhere, all the time. This is nearly what my closet looks like when I've kept up with laundry, (ish) and I wouldn't have it any other way.

For the love of ...
St. Petersburg
Okay this one is personal, just a touch. Finding my new home in St. Petersburg has been such a unique and welcoming experience, and to be able to bring what I love here made it all feel so complete. Consider this a tribute to the burg. :)

Unposed Perfection
B+L
In photography, especially events or weddings, there are those special moments that happen just so - or even by surprise. And then there are those moments that you wait for, thinking how the h*** has this just not happened yet!? And this was exactly that.

Could you guess what it was?
:)
Since the branding was only on one side of the bag, these shots were a coin toss. I was determined to encase everything (incl. the signature of the brand!). Many wonder why I wouldn't just set it up artificially, and this is my only supporting evidence.

The Takeaway
Last, but certainly not least.
No posed or curated moment will ever beat the natural stills that perfectly freeze movement, live and genuine emotion, and exciting color. You just have to know where to look. And when. And how, of course. (And a pinch of good luck always helps).
